Project Reflection:
Model United Nations is a simulation of the gathering of the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council. It offers members a chance to be a part of a larger organization. It teaches students and participants how to properly negotiate, how to create fair solutions, and about international government. They learn to write policy papers and resolutions, as well as amendments to the proposed resolutions. Students become delegates for an assigned country and must successfully represent the ideals and values of their country when working together with others to solve international issues. For example, the two issues that our Animas High School MUN conference focused on were the Refugee Crisis and Climate Change. Students can also volunteer to run the meeting and step in as a chairman. The chair's role is to manage the meeting so that it can have little to no interruptions. They set the agenda for the conference, keep it on track, in terms of time, and offer influence and suggestions to the delegates when confused. All of these roles come together to create an accurate and successful simulation. Model United Nations is a wonderful way to get involved in your school, your community, and the government.
I strengthened multiple skills throughout this project. Prior to this project, I little to no knowledge of government and absolutely no knowledge of United Nations. I learned how to write resolutions, amendments, and policy papers. I learned how to successfully represent a different country, mine being France, and all about their positions on world wide issues. Along with academic growth in these areas, I feel that I also grew in my ability to manage my peers. As a chair, I was partly responsible for making sure our Model United Nations conferences and practice conferences went smoothly. While this was great fun for me and, I hope, some of my peers, it was also difficult to manage all students as a whole. Because of the nature of the practice topics we discussed, our conferences got off track quickly. During these conferences, I learned to gradually ignore the interruptions and continue on with the meeting. I feel that I was able to truly maintain my professionalism and I am very proud that I could. This project opened my eyes to the way I interpret both international government and challenging conflicts with others. I am proud of the work I produced in this project and hope to further my growth in these areas in the future.
When this project started, I only knew of some international issues, but did not know to what extent they were occurring or what, if any, solutions were being proposed to solve them. When we focused on and prepared to debate the International Refugee Crisis in our Animas High School Model United Nations conference, I learned all about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, how it came to be, and why it is so important to discuss. I learned about the New York Declaration and the step forward that this declaration took us. When it came to Climate Change, I furthered my knowledge in the Paris Accord, the Green Climate Fund, and many more organizations working together to prevent further destruction of our planet. I also acquired knowledge about proposed solutions to Climate Change, some of those being a carbon tax, a cap and trade system, and Nationally Determined Contributions submitted by participating countries. I am glad that I got to acquire all of this new knowledge because I feel more educated on international issues and I feel that I could participate successfully in future debates.
