Project Reflection:
For my project, I decided to use this time to recreate my marketing platforms. I mainly focused on website design (i.e. online portfolio style), personal business cards that weren’t focused on a specific subject, and I looked into the idea (pros and cons) of a photography Instagram and other social media platforms. I chose this project because I really enjoy photography and graphic design, but I did not have a good way to display my work for a public audience. I had a website that I had been wanting to redo for a while, but I knew it would take a good amount of time to recreate, so I had been putting it off until I had that large amount of time where I could dedicate myself to my website. When we were presented with the Passion Project, I knew that this was finally my opportunity to at least start this, and hopefully finish. In this time, I was able to create and polish a whole new website, create beautiful personal business cards, and explore different styles of work to display on my website. I refined many of my past pieces and even used the time to start some new ones to display. I am glad that I can finally check this off my “to-do” list!
I developed my 21st-century skills by really diving into the concept of web design, marketing management, graphic design, photography, and more, which are all prime examples of today’s desired skills. When the project started, I only had experience with a few online website editors, but during this project, I was able to explore many more and compare them to find the one that worked best for me. When it came to business cards, I had absolutely no experience, but I was able to create many drafts and end with a professional, simple business card that I am proud to show off. I also used this time to look back at my photographs and graphic design work with a critical eye, deciding which ones should be shown off on my website and which ones could’ve used more refinement. For the ones that needed more refinement, I gave myself time to go back to them and fix things that needed to be fixed. While I developed these 21st-century digital skills, I feel that developing the ability to refine past work is also an important 21st-century skill to have. So this project provided me the opportunity to gain more experience with those types of personal skills.
My next step for this passion project will be to really get myself out there, using these new marketing platforms. At the exhibition, I received a lot of compliments and inquiry about the possibility of having clients. I was specifically asked about pet photography and doing senior photos. I have not yet had any experience with being paid to take photos for a client or selling my printed work, so it is a whole new learning process for me. I am excited about what it may bring me, though. I truly love photography and graphic design, so to be able to do what I love for money would be amazing, and is ultimately the goal of my life. I am eager to hear back from possible clients this Summer, really get started with this process, and get my work out there. Along with beginning work with clients, I also plan to maintain my website and maybe even printing my favorite pieces of canvas and hanging them in local shops. I may explore the idea of selling cards with my photographs printed on the front as well as other ways to sell my work.
