My Archetype: The Leader
"You're the ruler! Jung identified this archetype in many myths. Think of Zeus, "Father of the gods". You're a control freak that desires success and order. You're self-confident, self-relent, and extremely capable. You love looking out for your loved ones, and you'd make a great mentor. Your strength lies in your ability to assume responsibility and authority. Be careful, however, not too be too overbearing and pushy. In the end, you can't control everything!"
Read: The Alchemist
The Alchemist as described by Amazon:
"Combining magic, mysticism, wisdom and wonder into an inspiring tale of self-discovery, The Alchemist has become a modern classic, selling millions of copies around the world and transforming the lives of countless readers across generations.
Paulo Coelho's masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure. His quest will lead him to riches far different—and far more satisfying—than he ever imagined. Santiago's journey teaches us about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, of recognizing opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, most importantly, to follow our dreams."

Read: Siddhartha
Siddhartha as described by Amazon:
"In the novel, Siddhartha, a young man, leaves his family for a contemplative life, then, restless, discards it for one of the flesh. He conceives a son, but bored and sickened by lust and greed, moves on again. Near despair, Siddhartha comes to a river where he hears a unique sound. This sound signals the true beginning of his life -- the beginning of suffering, rejection, peace, and, finally, wisdom."

Project Reflection:
In this project, we studied Joseph Campbell's concept of the Hero's Journey, or otherwise known as the Monomyth (meaning one story), and we connected it to the art of storytelling. We found that there were eight main stages in the Hero's Journey, including the call to adventure, crossing the exit threshold, trials and temptations, the abyss, rebirth, apotheosis/reflection, crossing the return threshold, and rejoining the community. We also studied the Shadow Journey and Rites of Passages to see how they correlate with the Hero's Journey. We read The Alchemist and Siddhartha and conducted Socratic Seminars about the underlying themes in the books and how they connect to the Hero's Journey. For our final product, we practiced and refined the art of storytelling by sharing the our stories. We presented our stories on stage in front of the community on the night of exhibition. Every well thought out story has the Hero’s Journey in it, and to be a good storyteller, you need to address that journey with emotion, details, and good delivery.
I believe that I grew in my level of confidence and my mind became more open in this project. When I first heard we would be telling stories in front of the community, my first thought was not, "I am not going to do that," it was more along the lines of, "Maybe I will do that." I remember initially noticing and being proud of that first thought. Throughout the project, my confidence levels fluctuated when thinking about telling my story. I discussed with Ally and few times as I found my story, and when it came down to the exhibition night, I knew I had to tell it. When I finally told it on stage, my hands were steady, unlike past presentations. I find my level of confidence continuing to rise throughout every project we do. I believe that this is all due to getting out of my comfort zone, which is the whole goal of a Hero's Journey.
Some knowledge I will take away from this project is definitely the concept of the Hero's Journey and what it takes to be a hero. I now know what will happen if I refuse a call, how to persevere through trials and temptations, and how to be a hero in my own journey. The Alchemist and Siddhartha really opened my eyes to the concept of the Hero's Journey, by giving examples and being able to truly follow their journeys. For example, we discussed, in class, the possibility of Santiago, from The Alchemist, refusing his call. That was the main factor in helping me memorize the refusal of the call. The Hero's Journey now appears in everything I watch and read. I now find myself identifying the heroes, shadows, mentors, and more.
